Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on the 61st anniversary of his death.
In a brief message on X, PM Modi wrote, “Tributes to our former PM, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.”
Congress leaders also marked the occasion with emotional tributes, reflecting on Nehru’s enduring impact on India’s democratic and developmental journey.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, lauded Nehru’s visionary leadership in a social media post:
“Respectful tribute to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji on his death anniversary. With the dream of a strong and inclusive India, Nehruji laid a strong foundation for independent India… His contribution to social justice, modernity, education, constitution, and democracy is invaluable.”
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi offered floral tributes at Nehru’s memorial, Shanti Van, in New Delhi, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called Nehru the “creator of modern India.”
“Humble tributes on the death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji… the fearless guardian of democracy, the one who took India from zero to the peak… The 21st-century India cannot be imagined without his contributions,” Kharge posted on X.
The Congress Party also paid homage on its official handle, stating, “On his death anniversary, we honour the nation’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, whose vision shaped modern India… His ideals of democracy, secularism & scientific temper continue to guide our way forward.”
Jawaharlal Nehru, a key architect of modern India and a leading figure in the freedom movement, became the country’s first Prime Minister in 1947 and served until his death in 1964. Known for championing secularism, democratic institutions, and scientific progress, Nehru’s legacy continues to influence Indian politics and society.
Fondly called Chacha Nehru for his affection towards children, his birth anniversary on November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day across India.
